Phillip R. Christenson, CFA
Financial Planner & Portfolio Manager
Phillip's excitement for the financial markets began at an early age. He has been investing ever since buying his first mutual fund investments when he was 15. He knew even back then that his career path would be in Finance and Investments.
He attended the University of St. Thomas, in St. Paul Minnesota, where he received two undergraduate degrees: Finance and Accounting. During his time in college, he started and operated a small investment fund by pooling friends and families money which he invested at his discretion. After college, he had stints in retail and investment banking before joining the local hedge fund Deephaven Capital Management, as an investment accountant. While there, he pursued his Chartered Financial Analyst® (CFA) designation, passing all three exams covering topics such as Ethical and Professional Standards, Quantitative Methods, Economics, Financial Reporting and Analysis, Equity and Fixed Income, Portfolio Management, and Wealth Planning. He is a member of the CFA institute, which keeps him up to date on the issues affecting the investment community. He later joined PrairieView Partners, a private wealth management company, as an investment analyst where he worked on high-net worth client portfolios; analyzing investments, performing cash-flow analysis, and monitoring & re-balancing client portfolios. However, he quickly saw that the high minimum fees that the firm had in place meant that many people, who needed sound investment advice had to be turned away.
"They have it right. Their investment philosophy and planning is spot on, it's just not accessible to most people."
The solution was partner with his long-time friend, James Sexton, who shared the same investment beliefs.
"I know that alone, I didn't have all of the necessary skills to fully serve the client. Jim brings a different perspective, a tax & accounting perspective, that is necessary with all financial matters. We have a long-history - I remember sharing stock tips back in high school. Our principles are aligned, I wouldn't do business with anyone else."
On our Business Plan:
“I saw the need for sound financial advice without the prohibitive minimum fees. It is important that everyone has access to the critical investment advice without the conflicts of interest inherent with a commission based Broker/Dealer. At Phillip James Financial we are able to offer a High-Net Worth Investment solution that is not cost prohibitive to the every-day investor. Without access to the financial markets savings are quickly eaten up over-time by inflation, which can be detrimental to a retirement plan.”
